Dirty Fighting & Grappling
All out fighting isn't a sport, of course. But how do we bridge the gap between the two? How do we make sure that we're ready for reality? In today's video, Sifu Aaron takes you through the seemingly contradictory worlds of sport fighting (on the ground) and the realities of survival. Yes, you must have enough skill and experience to know how NOT to get choked out, or to get your arm broken. But you also must have the training - and resolve - to do what it takes to survive.

Wing Chun Ground Defense

Lots of us in Wing Chun say things like, “in real fights we don’t wanna go to the ground.” Or, “in the street with multiple opponents and concrete, we wanna stay on our feet.” Well, that’s all true. Absolutely. But what happens if we get taken down? Denial is never a good plan in life. Especially in self-defense. For that reason we must train ALL RANGES of combat. Yes, even on the ground. And t...
Infighting Genius: Chi-Sao Class Footage

Real infighting is nasty business. All targets are on the table and you have virtually no space...so, therefore, not much (if any) time to react. Chi-Sao gives us the only scientific means of practicing and developing skill at this most dangerous range. In today's video, Sifu Jason - along with Devin - show you how footwork, shifting, and structure are all involved in one brilliant package. You...
Wing Chun or Boxing? Both!

There's an irrational assumption that boxing and Wing Chun are antithetical and that you can't do both. The problem with this is that without safe sparring there's no way to develop timing and accuracy. Moreover, there's no better way than boxing to get a chance to see punches coming at you. That's a critical skill! But what about infighting? What about life-or-death type struggles where anythi...

At last, a video you've guys have been asking about for a long time. Biu Jee is Wing Chun's enigmatic third and final empty hand form. It's enveloped in a great amount of confusion. Some say it "shouldn't go out the door" - as in, it shouldn't be taught to any but the most special students. Others consider it a form so advanced as to contain deadly techniques. Another interpretation is that Biu...

To that end, in today's video we cover four essentials for of self-defense that should never be overlooked amidst all of our tra...

A sudden, violent encounter is no place for complexity. This was Bruce Lee's whole point. Simple, direct and effective is what you need in a violent clash and that's what JKD is supposed to deliver. This is most evident with JKD's leading straight punch....
Three HUGE Myths About Knives for Self-Defense

      Aaron was talking about how some of the old “rough and tumble” Scots-Irish would grow and file their nails to make them better weapons for eye-gouging. Plus, they practiced trying to actually pluck the eye out and some even kept them as trophies. Nasty stuff, isn’t it? We aren’t suggesting you do that…we’re just reporting some history here lol. This is great stuff and the only thing I would add is and I know I may get a lot of flack for this lol is I think that you should train this with someone who is a good grappler or go to a grappling school for a while and understand how they train. What I mean by that is a novice who has Mount position is different a good blue belt or purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu having Mount position on top of you. I'm not saying that what seafood is I'm not saying that what sifu is suggesting is impractical. I've just found that when people actually enter into a grappling arena and they've never actually grappled with grapplers everything goes out the window. Just like someone who does stand up and says oh if I was fighting a boxer I would do this and before they know if they've been hit with a four punch combo and they're on their back. Or someone who says I would do this to a Thai boxer one good Thai kick and that's the end of the fight because they've never felt that power. And although I know it's not always possible I think training with good grapplers even bringing them as guests to the school for a seminar and having them pull off a triangle choke on you or put that pressure on you or take you down hard out of nowhere those are the experiences I think we need to have in order to make this stuff work. And you said it best you don't rise to your expectations you fall to your level of training. Now I could be wrongbut I think we need the experience of having good grapplers sitting on us or taking us down getting that energy so we know how to respond. Hopefully I am making sense. Love your videos

    • @JKDandWingChun
      @JKDandWingChun 9 днів тому

      Great input, thanks. And we agree that, though no approach is perfect, that a professional mix of sport-based training (stand up and grappling) alongside the self-defense methodology is best. If a student has never been in the ring, then they have no idea what it’s like to have punches coming at them. Boxing is the best way to “remedy” that. Same thing with ground fighting. If someone has never wrestled nor done BJJ, they’re gonna have a hard time. This approach, we think, avoids the two extremes of pure sport thinking or believing that you can just eye jab everyone and that’s all there is to it. Like I said, great input. We truly believe that there’s no perfect way to train so we need intellectual honesty and professionalism in our approach.

    There are 2 types of martial artists. Ones whom adapt and survive, and "masters" whom get the breaks beat off them by pudgy guys with 3 months of kickboxing training. If you want to be all super traditional and "tHiS iSnT rEaL WiNg..." thats fine! Its ok! Do you boo boo! Life lets us do that! "Ive been in more fights than..." No you havent. I lived in Philly and Chicago. I was a paramedic in Gary Indiana for years, a nurse in a State prison, served in the Marine Corps AND was a cop for a short stint. Sure, i have had some tussles...but not THAT many. If you really have been in that many fights, then YOU are the problem and what people need to train themselves to defend against. But i have a feeling 99% of your "fights" were "Fuck you! No fuck you!" Then spend the next 2 hours telling your friends how you could have kicked that guys ass. I appreciate what you guys do down there in Greenville. If Wing Chun is going to survive time, it must adapt. Jeff Speakman has done the same thing with Kenpo, and boy does he catch flak too. "Ed Parker didnt teach...." Yeah well when Ed Parker was alive, 25% of the population didn't train to be ground dwelling strangle bunny arm snappers. Could you imagine if when guns became a thing if every knight was like "But ye old breast plate and longsword art the only way, nay i say the pure and right way!" But its ok! You guys can go sit in your dwindling class rooms, talk about how epic your "pure" wing chun is and all the "fights" you got in....sorry, how many people flipped you off and you fantasized about kung fu'ing their ass....and wonder why your masters that train for 20 years got knocked out by a guy that joined John Bono's kickboxing and choke you club. The rest of us will continue to grow adapt and learn to defend ourselves from an ever evolving hostile world. Either that or grab a spatula and yell "Have at thee, knave!"

    For those objecting to grappling techniques in a WC video, ask yourself this : if you found yourself on the ground, would it really matter what you used to get back up and away from your aggressor ? I watched a video about Pankration a few years back, arguably one of the oldest martial arts, and I suspect that the vid was removed because it breached some YT guideline on violence. Forget sport pankration - these guys were animals -- but I have no way of knowing how much of it was traditional martial art and how much was picked up in Athens bars this century. Does it work ? Probably. Would I want to train with people who deliberately target the eyes, groin, knees etc when they aren't headbutting you ? No, but at the end of the day THAT is what a martial art is. I'm not endorsing Krav Maga or Systema or anything else - just separating concepts from brutal reality.

    • @JKDandWingChun
      @JKDandWingChun 19 днів тому

      So, punching the groin and gouging the eyes while not - repeat NOT - getting choked out is literally Judo? That’s a preposterous statement. It violates logic in so many ways that I’ll just mention that the law of identity specifies that all things that exist are specific things. Judo doesn’t attack the groin or eyes. Wing Chun does. Therefore, this can’t be Judo. Case closed. Furthermore, an interpretation of Wing Chun (and that’s what Traditional Wing Chun is, by the way) that stubbornly refuses to deal with fighting off the ground, exposes itself as being a false ideology, not a true self-defense system. What are we supposed to do if we’re taken down then? Give up? Be killed? Our interpretative principle stems from the Biu Jee form in all its logical glory! If Saam Bai Fut is in Wing Chun, then tactics to get back to our feet are absolutely Wing Chun. While I sincerely appreciate your input I also hope that you seriously consider the logical and philosophical errors in your thinking that I’ve just exposed. It could very well have life life or death consequences, which is why we take it so seriously here. Best wishes to you and thanks for watching.

But, lets stick to the facts. 1) Brazilian Jujutsu, which I practiced with my Kids when they were young, do indeed practice strikes to the eyes and groin (in self-defense training). Brazilian Jujutsu is a very advanced form of Judo. 2) I studied Red Boat Wing Chun and William Cheung Wing Chun many decades ago. In the three empty hand forms; there was no rolling on the ground (as in Monkey Style or Dog Style). As explained to me by my Cantonese Friends; it's a style for women and/or petite men...who would prefer not to grapple with a larger opponent (such as in Shuai Jow). @@mgtowabbott6924 not sure what race has to do with any of this but anyways: 1) you studied wing chun decades ago, so what do you do now? comment on youtube videos about wing chun saying oh that’s not wing chun because you don’t see some identifiable wing chun technique that comes from one of the 3 empty handed forms? 2) now i’m not trying to start a lineage debate or war in the comments because I could care less about wing chun politics -but William Cheung’s forms also look VERY different than almost every other lineage. also his so called “traditional” wing chun is literally just a trademark and nothing more - but why does it look so different than other lineages? he modified it, and that’s not for me or you to say oh that’s not real wing chun or it is real wing chun because at the end of the day neither of us are probably qualified to do so nor is it even necessary. so, back to your statement about how it’s not wing chun because in the 3 forms you aren’t rolling around on the ground tells me that you pretty much don’t know what the forms are for. simply put they allow you to practice your techniques, train your stance, body, mind, and etc. Siu Nim Tao builds that foundation, Chum Kiu builds on that further by adding steps and kicks, and Biu Jee adds even more options for striking as well as teaching you center line recovery for less than ideal positions. it’s not just CHOREOGRAPHY. just because we stand in the Yee Jee Kim Yeung Ma in Siu Nim Tau doesn’t mean we’d fight that way, and matter of fact you should NEVER fight in that stance but that’s besides the point. 3)Yes, Shuai Jiao is chinese wrestling and believe it or not has its focus on wrestling. if that’s what your looking for then that’s great, but in my opinion, the beauty of wing chun is that it’s a self defense system for EVERYONE. also notice how you said BJJ practices eye and ground strikes BUT in self defense training (exactly how you put it)… that’s what we do in wing chun is it not? 4) i’d recommend to stop thinking in terms of oh that’s wing chun or oh that’s BJJ and just focus on the shit that works for YOU. call it rex kwon do if you want idc but like others said in the comments does it really matter what you use? whether its on the ground or standing? no because as long as it works thats what matters, NOT the style. 5) want to see some more good examples of wing chun used in ground fighting? look up erik paulson and kevin lee, they did a video together where erik uses wing chun concepts (that you learn and build up through forms and other training of course because the forms are not fighting) on the ground. watch that and tell me wing chun doesn’t have ground fighting - now not everyone trains that way and that’s one issue with wing chun today but it doesn’t mean we don’t have it, it’s just neglected. 6) i’ll end it here but someone else said it best in a different comment. if you’ve really been in so many fights making you this superior fighter or whatever then you truly are who we train to defend ourselves against because as martial artists we should ALWAYS look to avoid fights. sorry for any poor grammar or if i sound all over the place im writing this at 6 am while i can’t sleep but i just wanted to give my input as well.

      we respectfully disagree with the approach to Wing Chun that it's a fixed system of commandments. That's idolatry, by the way. On the contrary, we consider it a systematic methodology of structural truth and tactical principles to be used by the self-defender, not the other way around. As proof of this interpretation I give you the Biu Jee form...especially the Saam Bai Fut section. This interpretation allows us to both honor our rich history (tradition) without sacrificing our very lives to it. Thanks for your input and for the opportunity to address a very serious misinterpretation and best wishes to you.

      @@JKDandWingChun it's a good video. The techniques are valid, but it is all just fighting on the ground. Calling it "Wing Chun" doesn't make it any different to the various other labels that describe exactly the same thing. Judo newaza includes these things, although men tussling on the ground existed before judo. In recent times, BJJ chose to focus on the ground work and prompted a revival of interest in submission wrestling more broadly. Adding a groin punch isn't a magic difference that elevates raises ground fighting to Wing Chun staus. It is what many humans would do fairly instinctively. If JKD was about taking what works (because fighting is just fighting), why label this video "Wing Chun" other than to increase views or receive more comments like this one?

      Utter nonsense. Aaron is showing how to NOT make huge mistakes in the first part all WHILE attacking the eyes and groin. If BJJ starts eye-gouging and chain punching the groin you might be right. But, anyway, I know this is a tough subject for many. But knowing how to both defend takedowns AND fight if we’re taken down is commensurate with the Wing Chun system. A combat science that doesn’t address the elephant in the room is no such thing. It’s a combat fantasy. We want our students to be ready…and as safe/prepared as possible. To that end, we believe that the Wing Chun principles (not to mention the Biu Jee form itself) all lead us to a great diversity of application that meets the demands of modern self-defense. So, no. It’s not essentially BJJ anymore than throwing a quick straight punch makes Wing Chun essentially boxing. Or using a knee makes it Muay Thai. Thanks for watching and I truly hope this helped not only yours but all of our viewers’ understanding.

      @@JKDandWingChun Thanks for the video. Certain things that are illegal in both BJJ and MMA tournaments are really game changers in ground fighting.

    Any academy claiming to teach JKD that deviates from these essential JKD characteristics: simplicity/directness and the idea of intercepting the opponent's attack is not true JKD. The instructors are either intentionally lying to the people or they are wrong in good faith
